Discover Excellence
We believe training should prepare the mind without exhausting the spirit

Thank you for your interest in our Internal Medicine Residency Program.

Legacy’s Internal Medicine Training Program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and was originally accredited in February, 1958. In the last half-century, the program and its vibrant teaching community has aggressively invested in the training of exceptional future physicians.

One Program - Two Hospitals - Five Clinics - Diversity in Training

The Legacy Internal Medicine Training Program provides an outstanding opportunity for residents to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be successful in the practice of Internal Medicine.
Residents have a unique educational experience, learning in two tertiary teaching hospitals, a mile apart, with two distinct inpatient teaching environments.
  • Legacy Emanuel Hospital is Oregon’s busiest Level One Trauma Center, and houses the only Burn Center between Seattle and Sacramento. It serves a large underserved population and is strongly committed to the community it serves.
  • Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital and Medical Center has an active open heart surgery program, an autologous bone marrow transplant program, and a renal transplant service. It is a center for geriatric care, and has outstanding chronic disease management programs including oncology, diabetes, cardiology and pain management.
  • Multiple Legacy Clinic locations offer residents the opportunity to experience ambulatory Internal Medicine in urban, suburban, and rural environments.

We are strongly committed to academic medicine – each rotation offers a completely integrated evidence based curriculum, and our residents interact with a vibrant, academic faculty, nationally renowned visiting professors, third and fourth year medical students who regularly rotate in both Legacy Portland Hospitals, on the wards and in the ICU.

Flexible Training Opportunities

Internal Medicine has changed over the last decade, with many internists choosing between inpatient and outpatient careers. Our residents also have the opportunity to design their own career tracks, with the ability to choose a hospitalist or primary care certificate track. Our residents can define their area of concentration based on their interest and future goals

Affordable and Beautiful Environment

Portland is an ideal place to live. Surrounded by mountains and only an hour from the Pacific Ocean, Portland offers a huge number of recreational and relaxation activities. We try to incorporate some of the beauty of our environment her in the Pacific North West into our training program -- as part of our commitment to resident self-renewal and communication, all residents attend four off-campus retreats each year, usually in spectacular locations.
